It is my pleasure to have the opportunity to be a part of this very inspiring initiative. I am very passionate about coaching and more so the sport of running. Running is very supportive to build athleticism and general good health including physical and mental well-being.  I am the co-founder and head coach of the +oaw Running Club (North, South, East, West & Central), head coach for the National Triathlon Carifta Team as well as founder and head coach of the +oaw Multi-Sport and Youth Academy clubs.

I have over 25 years of coaching experience in several sporting disciplines and hold certificates as a middle and long distance elite running coach, having completed programs at Leeds University in Britain and The Lorna Kiplagat High Altitude learning Center in Iten Kenya. My current running mentors are Ian Kiprono, head Coach of the Addidas sponsored St Patrick’s Youth Academy in Iten Kenya and Timo Limo Head Coach of The Heart of Kenyan Running Club and National 800m runner. Having experienced coaches to guide you along your journey makes attaining your goals more attainable.

Hoping everyone has the most enjoyable experience with this event, one which will inspire you to keep on running.

I am Learie Lezama, veteran runner, and member of the Trinidad and Tobago Road Runners Club ( TTRRC) with twenty-nine (29) years of racing experience and countless miles of training. During those years I have completed twenty-five (25) marathons locally, regionally, and internationally with a personal best (PB) time of 2 hrs 57 mins 40 sec. Some of those big-city races that I have completed include New York, Chicago, London, and the Boston marathon. I’ve also competed in many half marathons,10k, and 5k races. I’m a true fan of the sport. Except for the occasional flu or injury, nothing keeps me away from running. I feel elated when walkers and joggers adopt this healthy lifestyle and improve to become competitive athletes which is one of the reasons I’ve decided to give my support to this positive venture. I think this is a great initiative to get the students involved in physical activity that will have a fulfilling effect on their lives.

Mall Crawlers comprises a group of runners who take pleasure in running together early in the morning before the sun rises, being part of the flow; enjoying the fresh air, the faint chirping of the birds, the sounds of breathing and the feet meeting the bitumen; not necessarily competing with anyone. “Running! If there’s any activity happier, more exhilarating, more nourishing to the imagination, I can’t think of what it might be.”(Joyce Carol Oates)

We are a dynamic group of adults spanning mid-thirties to sixty plus years. We enjoy participating in local races and sometimes head abroad to represent our club in marathons. The Mall Crawlers came into being over 20 years ago. Some of the founding members are still around, to provide the “troops“ with training schedules, individual coaching, mentoring, inspirational quotes and life lessons.

We are excited to join StudentsUnited in this venture as through running we have established an affair of the heart, enabling us to reap the benefits of a stronger health and increased lung capacity, while deriving the mood-lifting effect and mental acuity, especially during this period of the pandemic. People often describe us as the “mad people running group” but once you get a couple of miles under your belt, the bug hits you and you are hooked!
