Prelude to the Sand Fest
At the end of July, the Bafasports Community Pop-Up Series rolled into Aranguez. This past weekend, the energy shifted to the shoreline as runners from across Trinidad and Tobago gathered at Clifton Hill Beach in Guapo for the Sancouche 5K Community Pop-Up.
Trading paved roads for sand, participants embraced a different kind of challenge as they lined up for another evening of community fitness, with the scenic coastline providing the backdrop for a memorable 5K experience – a prelude to the upcoming Mayaro Coconut Run.

The Route
The course itself was a straightforward out-and-back route along the beach, and while the layout was simple, the soft and uneven sand tested runners’ balance, strength and endurance, making every stride more demanding than a traditional road race.

About Sancouche…
The Sancouche 5K also served as a fundraiser for the Sancouche Parang Band, bringing together fitness, culture and community in one vibrant event.
Rooted in the traditions of Parang and Latin music, the event reflected the band’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage while encouraging healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
Whether participants came to race or simply enjoy the atmosphere, the evening delivered a unique blend of movement, music and togetherness.
St Hillare and Moreno command the sands
Among the standout performances, Sheni St Hillaire led the men’s field in 22 minutes, 36.8 seconds, while Chemakie Baptiste finished in second (26:38.6), and Akim Hunt in third (26:49.8).
Javanah Moreno topped the women’s division in 29:33.5 with Charmaine Dookie (29:48.9) finishing second, and RoSalie Figaro (40:59.4) completed the top three.
The competitive racing, coupled with the relaxed beach atmosphere, once again highlighted the growing popularity of the Community Pop-Up Series as it continues to reach communities across the country.

The momentum carries on in a packed August for us.
