Turning Steps into Meals: The KFC 5K is Finally Here

Miles That Matter: Colonel’s 5K Fuels Food Support Effort

“Every step nourishes someone.”

That’s the word from everybody’s favourite fast food joint in the 868 going into the upcoming weekend for Saturday’s Colonel’s 5K and 1K at the Grand Stand at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

We’re excited for this one, that’s for sure.

The hype on the road has steadily risen since the end of Carnival, particularly with our midnight series, featuring a four-race weekend in two islands between March 21-22, plus the double-whammy over the Easter Weekend with the Oasis Inaugural 7K, and the Midnight Half Marathon.

Runners and race enthusiasts alike are still buzzing and we’re back here to tell you that there’s more from where that came from.

Savannah strides. Runners get the race going at the start of January’s NCC Carnival 1K and 5K at the Grand Stand, QPS. We’re returning to our common stomping ground tomorrow to host the Colonel’s 5K and 1K, whic promises to match that Carnival energy and raise funds for a good cause. Image: Bafasports Media.

Impact that goes far beyond the bucket

Before the run there’s a reason. This race isn’t just for the 5K thrill. KFC has partnered with us also in an attempt to help push on their Harvest Programme, which turns surplus into support, and helps to feed families across Trinidad and Tobago.

With over 900,000 meals shared and counting the idea is that every stride in Saturday’s will help make a difference, as eight different NGOs will benefit from this support, including:

  • Living Waters
  • Church of God Ministries International
  • Caribbean Da’wah Association
  • San Fernando Shelter for Displaced Persons
  • San Fernando West Women on the Move
  • International Youth Fellowship
  • Walking with the Spirit Ministries

Adding to that, you know how we do it at Bafasports.

There’s some of the familiar bells and whistles, including a pre-race aerobics warm up, and a race village, but there’s more. Of course there’s more.

There’s always something outrageous (in a good way) going on in our flagship races, and this time it’s no different. Get your white suits and bowties ready – black bowtie to be precise – as the two lucky winners will walk away with $2500 for the best-dressed Colonel Sanders impersonator prize.

That’s the word from local comedian and social media personality, Jr Lee otherwise known as Gervail Sean Lemo in his endorsement of the event.

First place winners in the race in both the men’s and women’s division can look forward to a $1500 prize when they mount the top of the podium.

Over to the road

The course is one Bafa aficionados are pretty familiar with. Starting from the Grand Stand entrance opposite Haagen Das on Dundonald Street, before cutting down Hayes Street after passing Queen’s Park West, circling back to the Savannah at St Mary’s College Grounds and cutting through St Clair, and completing the rest of the Savannah lap at the Grand Stand.

And don’t forget the youngsters will be out and about from 2.30pm for the 1K prelude to get the day going earlier on.

Will Tafari continue his hot streak?

KFC T&T is famous for their sizzling-hot specials whether rain or shine, and Tafari Waldron is also becoming famous for scorching the asphalt with his recent record at our events.

So the burning question is will he make it three for three in a seven-day spell on the Bafasports circuit?

Don’t forget April has only just started

More races are down the pipeline leading towards the eagerly-anticipated Midnight Marathon and Ekiden Relay on May 10. The Albert King 5K hits the road on April 19, while St George’s 5K will be on April 25, and Maraval Health Ministry 5K on April 26.

We’re just getting started.
